Here it is! The first public preview on Caster!
http://www.indiegamemag.com/2008/11/caster-preview.html
The chaps at the Indie Game Mag gave what I feel is a very fair assessment of Caster.
Based on their feedback (which is similar to some other feedback I’ve had before) I will be upresing some of the textures and increasing the poly count a bit on some of the models.
Thanks Indie Game Mag!

I must say this looks pretty cool. 1 question)? Is a port to the Pandora a possibility http://www.openpandora.org It has some pretty beefy HW too much to list procede to wiki 😉 http://pandorawiki.org/Main_Page if you are interested in a port you should probably get in contact with the developers on the forum about setting up priceing etc… since the console is meant to be friendly to open source and indi commercial titles alike.

Yes, I could port it back to Linux. It was originally developed on Linux and later ported to Windows and the Mac.
I’ve already considered porting it to DS, but it would be pointless since no one could play it except for home brew types. Then there is the question of appropriateness for the platform. Caster plays great with a mouse and keyboard or dual analog stick controller, but I’m a little skeptical of using a stylus and D-pad together. I would probably need to change the game play a little to make it work.
So Pandora looks interesting. If I don’t have time to do it myself, I might be interested in working with someone else to help with the port. However, the install base is pretty small and I’m not sure about the benefits of having it on Pandora. If someone can convince me that it would be worth my time and money to do the port, then I’ll probably do it.

Having this game on the Pandora would be AWESOME. It might need some more polish, right now it looks more like a tech demo than a game, but if the game itself ends up being fun, I might even buy it. 🙂

Well, well… The video footage is impressive there. And the Pandora would do dual analogs with left/right trigger buttons easily enough. If you don’t have the time, PLEASE email me- this ought to be out for Pandora AND x86 Linux as well as Windows and Mac. I’m one of the people with a rev2 developer board in hand and I’m working at moving some of LGP’s back catalog over.

Thanks for the support everyone!
Even though it should run fine on Linux, there is still the issue with OpenGL ES 2.0. I developed Caster to be as compatible as possible with older hardware so it’s fully OpenGL 1.1 compliant. However, to take it over to OpenGL ES 2.0, I would have to replace / rework large sections of rendering code because they did away with fixed function and immediate mode and that breaks backward compatibility (so sad).
It can definitely be done, but I think I’ll wait until I release the current version of the game before considering it further. It should be out in January when they announce the finalists for the Independent Games Festival.

Heh… While the support is to ES 2.0 (shader based rendering) the Pandora will also have an ES 1.1 support set API. This is closely matched to the OpenGL 1.1-1.4 rendering pipeline, sans immediate mode (glBegin/glEnd or Display List) rendering operations. Removing the immediate mode stuff might be a bit of a problem, but I’m in the process of doing that sort of task right now on some other titles…
I’ll lurk. I’m the patient sort, so it won’t hurt to wait and see how things pan out on your end. I’m hoping you do well at IGF.
